Phillip Moffitt’s career reflects his uniquely combined experiences as a visionary entrepreneur and explorer of the inner life. Moffitt was the owner and editor-in-chief of Esquire magazine from 1979 to 1987, during which time Esquire twice won a National Magazine Award. Before taking over Esquire, Moffitt was a founding partner of the 13-30 Corporation serving both as editor-in-chief and president from 1974-1983. In 1989, Inc. Magazine named Moffitt one of the top entrepreneurs of the decade. Upon selling Esquire to Hearst Magazines, Moffitt left his position as editor-in-chief and chief executive officer of the publishing enterprise he created to begin what he calls his “third life,” a period of personal exploration and entrepreneurial activity that included co-founding Light Source Computer Imaging, a software publishing company.
On the personal side, Moffitt immersed himself in studying mindfulness meditation, Theravada Buddhism, Jungian psychology, Aikido, yoga, and various mind-body healing techniques. Subsequently, he developed a process for managing one’s life, which he calls Life Balance work, and in 1991 he founded the Life Balance Institute to help others find more meaning and a greater sense of well-being in their lives. He integrates his knowledge of Western psychology with his mindfulness meditation experience to provide training in Skillful Living to individuals and therapists. And he combines his expertise in both business and inner development to provide training in sustainable leadership to executives.
In addition to being director of the Life Balance Institute, Phillip is a member of the Teachers Council at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Northern Calif. He leads meditation retreats at Spirit Rock and at other Buddhist centers around the United States and Canada and teaches a weekly meditation class in Marin County, Calif. He has written about mindfulness for Yoga Journal, Body and Soul, and Shambhala Sun. Those articles and talks from his weekly meditation class are published on his website, www.dharmawisdom.org. He is the author of Dancing with Life and co-author of The Power to Heal and Medicine’s Great Journey. Phillip is currently writing a book about skillful living, which will be published in 2011.
